The nature of Service Learning / Creativity, Action & Service
...if you believe in something, you must not just think or talk or write, but must act. Peterson (2003) "ISL Cares" - Service to the community is immersed in the culture of the International School of Latvia and is referred directly
in the school mission statement in which it states that we will "act with integrity and responsibility locally and globally to transform their world in positive ways". It is our hope that our students will live up to these words through their actions as part of the Service Learning and Creativity, Action, and Service programs.
Some Changes to the Program:As you may have noticed, the MYP Community and Service program has changed to the new Service Learning program, following CEESA initiatives. Students will no longer be working on volunteer hours outside of school, but they will be initiating and working on Service projects based on what they are learning in the classroom. These projects will be student driven and will help the students understand that what they learn in the classroom does have a real-world application. This program includes students from Preschool to Grade 10, and the DP students will help organize projects as a part of their CAS requirements.
ISL Staff and students already have some great projects underway, so stay tuned for updates on what is going on at school.
Coming soon - ISL celebrates World Animal Day, October 4th, with it's annual Animal Art Auction, and other fun activities.
School wide "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" project is also in the works.
With the new program we hope to continue showing the community that ISL truly does care!
