School Counselor

For those of you who I have not met, my name is Brooke Nair and I am the school counselor. I would like to extend a warm welcome as our new school year begins at ISL.  It has been exciting to see all the wonderful students coming into our new school this year.  As your school counselor, my goal is to help promote student success in academic, personal, social and career development.

This year I will be hosting the PYP Lunch Bunch Program for grades 1-5 and the PYP NBA(Never Been Absent) Program for K-5.  For the  MYP and PYP Parents, there is a new School Counseling Newsletter that will come out monthly under the school counseling section.  Check out the September issue!

The ISL School Counseling program is an integral part of the total ISL school program.  School counselors provide direct services to students, parents and educational staff to help promote a positive school environment and focus on student’s social, emotional, and academic needs. The ISL school counselor provides individual and group counseling, parent and teacher consultation, guidance lessons, and school wide programs that promote positive student environment.  As a school counselor, I am able to advocate for all students and help assist administrators, staff, teachers and families.  I look forward to working together to help our students learn and develop.  If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at bnair@isl.edu.lv

Classroom Guidance Lessons – Lessons begin in September. School guidance lessons are embedded into the IB curriculum. The classroom guidance lessons are for K-10th grade and are proactive in its focus based on the developmental stages of students. The lesson schedules vary according to grade level.  Guidance lessons cover academic and personal social skills and career awareness such as study skills, organization, problem solving.

Individual Counseling - The counselor meets with individual students to help them resolve problems that are interfering with their learning.  Students may ask for assistance or may be referred by parents, teachers or other school staff.

Small Group Participation - The counselor works with students in smaller group settings to address specific areas of support, concern, or to develop their social and/or academic skills (ie. Friendship, self-control, organization and study skills, etc..). These groups are formed as needed and parents are contacted.

Responsive Services - I am available to help students that have family crisis that affect them while they are attending school.

System Support - Counselors provide professional development and student support services.

School Counseling Programs

PYP-- Lunch Bunch—Begins August 29! Lunch Bunch is great fun! This group is designated for returning and new students at ISL. This will be one time a week in the PYP program during lunch. The first 6 weeks new students and a buddy come to lunch with the school counselor. It is designed to help your child get acquainted with a new school, encourage positive social skills as well as meet other new students and become familiar with the IB attitudes and profiles. After new students get acquainted six students per week are chosen to have lunch with the school counselor to eat, play, and talk. Not only is a time for students to get to know the counselor, it is also a time to work continuing to embrace the PYP attitudes and profiles while having fun.(Listen around the halls and you'll hear many students talking about Lunch Bunch!)

PYP--NBA program (Never Been Absent) - Begins September 6 -- Attendance is an important component to positive academic achievement. If students are to reach their potential as 21st century learners they must come to school.  The new attendance program  implemented is “The NBA Program”.  I track each student’s attendance, tardies and early dismissals, Kindergarten through fifth grade. Students who are never absent, tardy or checked out early for a full 9-weeks receive an NBA All-star certificate and attend the NBA Party at the end of the quarter during lunch.  Group pictures will be displayed on the “Wall of Fame” on the school counselor Bulletin Board.
