Parent Session -with Kathy Collins - Jan. 30 @ 10:00

Dear Elementary Parents,
We are excited to announce that renowned author and consultant Kathy Collins will be coming to ISL at the end of this month to support our elementary teachers in reading instruction. Kathy Collins will be offering a workshop for parents on Wednesday, January 30 from 10:00-11:00am in the Media Center. The workshop will focus on ideas to support your children at home to become avid, engaged readers.
January 30 Workshop Summary:
There are so many options competing for children's time and attention, from after school activities to social media. Meanwhile, research shows that children who choose to read and who read a lot are likely to achieve higher academic and professional success as well as personal fulfillment. It's vital, then, that children develop healthy reading identities and habits from the start. In this parent workshop, Kathy Collins will share ideas for how families can help their children become more likely to love to read and choose to read.  She'll share research and suggestions for creating an environment at home that encourages children to overcome hesitations or resistance in order to develop positive attitudes and a sense of pleasure around reading.  Kathy will also offer practical tips for ways parents and caregivers can continue to support their children's reading lives even after they've learned to read the words.
